I have my doubts about the effectiveness of that. A trained dog may actually attack someone with a gun, and not otherwise.

Also, having been part of a marksmanship team (in the military), and around colleagues who handled guns, I have seen my share of people discharging guns by mistake when distracted or nervous – including two people who shot themselves.Ned Kockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02755560885749335053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8859456735165996893.post-12765973502863033392013-10-03T16:30:04.471-07:002013-10-03T16:30:04.471-07:00Hi WilliamS. It seems that repellents are generally effective with dogs and other animals:

http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/3781506

However, I often hear about instances in which dogs attack and kill skunks, so I wonder if a repellent would really work well with all dogs.

Also, my guess is that most people will not have a repellent with them, or any other device that requires some planning to acquire and carry, when attacked by a dog.Ned Kockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02755560885749335053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8859456735165996893.post-49451309091879317652013-10-01T16:37:24.101-07:002013-10-01T16:37:24.101-07:00I ran a pack of wild dogs in my youth. Its owner pulled it back by the leash and said "Don't worry, he doesn't mean it." I said "That's just as well or I'd have had to kill him." He looked very alarmed and made off at speed, dragging his pooch after him.

Having to deal with an aggressive dog without its nasty owner is not something I've experienced. I can tell you how to deal with aggressive calves though. I assumed to be pretty handy with dogs, doing mostly what you mentioned in the post. Until I once, on a run, made the mistake to pass between a (rather small) dog and its mistress. I couldn't even look how fast I got bitten in my thigh. Nothing serious, but the mistress also didn't realize what has happened. So I can very well support your emphasizing on not trying to be fast enough to kick or slap onto an attacking dog.Friedrichnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8859456735165996893.post-3921402487905296142013-09-30T09:40:33.108-07:002013-09-30T09:40:33.108-07:00Thanks Anon; fixed.
